We met in the BVI and lived there (10 years for Bob; 1 year for Diana), and hadn’t been back since 1985. What a difference 35 years makes! The islands and the sea are as lovely as ever, but we were saddened to see traffic jams, massive cruise ships, and crowded beaches that used to be pristine.
We visited the BVI aboard Aqua Marine, a 48′ sailing catamaran, with four friends. The sailing was excellent, and we were joined by a professional skipper, Captain Re-Re, as Bob was recovering from a bout of pneumonia. Damage from Hurricane Irma is still visible, though the islands seem to be making a very good comeback. It was Diana’s first time to visit the more remote islands of Jost Van Dyke and Anegada, which we thoroughly enjoyed — they reminded us of the BVI of our memories. We also sailed to Virgin Gorda (The Baths! Little Dix Bay!), Cooper Island, and Norman “Treasure” Island.
Below is Bob’s video of our trip, with some of our favorite snapshots below that. You can click on any photo to start a slideshow.
